Helium

The first evidence of the existence of helium was discovered in 1868. Since then helium has never ceased to fascinate us as it’s unique properties are constantly creating new applications.

Helium is the second lightest element, one-seventh as heavy as air. It is chemically inert, has low solubility in water and cannot be made to burn or explode. Helium is the coldest known liquid at -269 °C.

Helium can be used for a multitude of applications, as a “light gas” that can lift balloons and airships, as a detector gas to detect the smallest of leaks in pipelines and tanks, as an important component in shielding gases for welding, as a carrier gas in residue analysis, in the manufacture of optical glass fibres or as a coolant in space technology and medicine. We can supply helium in a full range of purities and mixtures, in any quantity you require and as either a compressed or liquefied gas.

Gaseous helium

As a gas the special properties of helium are used in many industries and processes such as diving, lifting, leak testing, automotive industry, semiconductor manufacturing, cutting and welding, nanotechnology, analytical purposes and for inflating balloons.

Liquid helium

As a liquid, helium is supplied to the customers in special insulated ISO containers or dewars and as a gas in cylinders, multi cylinder packs (MCP’s) or in tube trailers.

Helium in balloons

We can also help you plan your event, advising you on the cylinder size you require and helping you calculate the quantity you need.

Safety

AGA puts safety first, therefore we advice you on how to safely handle, store and transport of high-pressure helium balloon gas cylinders and want to give guidelines on safe balloon inflation.

Before handling and using balloon gas cylinders, ensure you understand the properties of the gas, the potential hazards, correct manual cylinder handling and actions to take in the event of an emergency.

Balloon gas is safe but you should never deliberately inhale the gas as it is an asphyxiant.

The gas is stored under high pressure in heavy, robust cylinders. The cylinders need to be stored in a safe area and handled with great care to avoid potential accidents and personal injury.
